Growing food is only half the problem. Getting it across the Commonwealth before it spoils is another. At Tenpines Bluff, the privately owned Northstar Cold Storage is attempting to build something the Commonwealth rarely thinks about: a cold chain. The company's northern depot receives, sorts, stores and prepares perishable freight for caravan transport. Powered cold storage keeps food chilled before departure, while reusable freight containers help supplies move through the network. Northstar's plans extend beyond food. Temperature-sensitive medical supplies can also be transported through the system, with medical cargo recorded and handled separately from ordinary food shipments. For settlements without full refrigeration facilities, smaller insulated ice-storage points could allow chilled deliveries to be held temporarily until collection. Tenpines is currently the proving ground. Across the settlement, Minutemen Agricultural Division North is researching ways to improve food production. Northstar remains completely independent, but the connection is obvious. Better farming can create larger harvests. Larger harvests can create surplus. And surplus needs somewhere to go. The depot has also acquired a fusion-core recharging station, allowing guards and caravan personnel using power armour to recharge while shipments are prepared. But Northstar hasn't solved everything. Refrigeration requires power. Ice needs replacing. Equipment needs maintaining. Caravans still need protecting. And Commonwealth roads remain dangerous. One cold store won't transform Commonwealth trade. A network of them might. Grow more. Waste less. Move it farther.
