THE KEY Today, at last, I turned in my key to the shop—signed all the papers— it was cold and raining outside. Calculators and computers in silence contemplated my last steps echoing in the dark to the door. The key had opened my way, led me to busy hands, to inside friends, our own beehive anthill of sweat and pulltogether. We put into one workpudding our hands, our machines and our backs—we groaned, at times we cussed, fell, pained and strained under loads; with our keys, we opened locks and hearts, counted money, time, and luck. The key was a blessing, at times a cursing, a light, it was food, and a cause. We united our keys, our kinship, to help a mighty marketplace, a pressing of people, old gentlemen with pants rolled up above ankles, and our mean-spirited patrons as well. My key served me all the while, without bend or rust. I found the door in the dark, opened, and closed myself out, turned my collar to the wind and rain, went in search of another key as good as the last.
