Phourty Sports Network Presents: Predecessor — Episode 3: Steve DeBerg Some careers are measured by the men who came after. Steve DeBerg's is measured by three of them. Joe Montana took his job in San Francisco. John Elway took his job in Denver. Steve Young took his job in Tampa Bay, and then, years later, took Montana's job too. Every time DeBerg looked over his shoulder, a Hall of Famer was standing there. But this isn't a story about being replaced. A tenth-round pick out of San Jose State, taken 275th overall by Dallas in 1977, DeBerg threw for over 34,000 yards across a career that outlasted most of the men who passed him. In 1979 he carried the 49ers offense with 578 attempts. In 1980 he beat the Bears with a microphone strapped to his shoulder pads. And in 1990, at 36 years old, he led the Kansas City Chiefs to the playoffs on a broken finger held together with a surgical pin: 3,444 yards, 23 touchdowns, four interceptions. This episode features Joe Montana on what he learned watching DeBerg work, John Elway on learning the position by watching him play, and DeBerg himself on the friendship with Montana and the day he first saw Elway's arm.
