Venus: Evidence of an Ocean That Might Not Exist

Venus has the chemical fingerprint of a lost ocean, and not one trace of the ocean itself. Here is what that evidence actually says, and what it does not. The hydrogen in Venus's atmosphere carries deuterium at roughly a hundred times the ratio found on Earth. That is the signature of water lost on an enormous scale. But the body it belongs to has never been found: no coastline, no sediment, no delta. Around 500 million years ago the entire surface was resurfaced, and every place that record could have been written was buried under lava. So we are left with one number and three rival readings of it.
