In this presentation, we discuss practical tips and strategies for BCBAs working within the public school system and collaborating with special education teachers, administrators, related service providers, advocates, and families. The presentation explores the importance of empathy, collaboration, and understanding the different roles professionals play within special education. Topics covered include: • Strategies for working collaboratively with special education teachers in public schools • The importance of empathy and becoming an effective team member • Understanding the different professionals involved in the public school system, including teachers, administrators, central office personnel, advocates, and related service providers • What a typical day may look like for a self contained special education teacher and how a BCBA can support the classroom • Practical data collection methods, including Antecedent Behavior Consequence (ABC) data, frequency, duration, and intensity data • Identifying possible functions of behavior, including attention, escape, access to preferred items or activities, and sensory needs • Using assessment information to support the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) process • Helping special education teachers develop clear, observable, and measurable operational definitions of target behaviors • Using behavior analytic principles while recognizing the unique needs and expectations of public school environments This presentation is designed for BCBAs, behavior analysts, RBTs, special education teachers, school psychologists, administrators, related service providers, and others interested in supporting students with disabilities in public schools.
