We Stumbled Across an Archaeological Dig | Exploring Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula

Sometimes even while travelling, you need a down day. We took a little break at Butter Pot Provincial Park and slowed things down for the day — although apparently our version of taking it easy still includes hiking. 😂 We decided to tackle the Peter’s Pond Hiking Trail, obstacles and all, and just enjoy a quieter day before heading out exploring again. The next day, we were back on the road exploring more of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula — and this is where the day took an unexpected turn. We stumbled across an archaeological dig site we had no idea was there. One of those completely unplanned stops that makes you pull over and say, “Well… we have to check this out!” From there, we continued on to explore Fort Louis and Castle Hill before making our way to Landwash. Signal Hill was supposed to be another stop, but by the time we got there it was later in the day and, quite frankly, way too “peoply” for us. 😂 So we decided Signal Hill could wait for another adventure. And really, that's how we like to travel. Some days we slow down. Some days we hike. Some days we head out with a plan and stumble across something we never expected.
