Attack Helicopters Had Four Different Beginnings

An armed Huey carries the weapons meant to protect a formation of troop transports. Then the transports pull ahead—and the helicopter with the guns falls behind. That contradiction produced the modern attack helicopter. This visual history rewinds from the overloaded Huey gunship to a fragile Sikorsky R-4 rescuing one person at a time in Burma in 1944. It follows the helicopter through medical evacuation and troop lift in Korea, explains why hovering consumes so much power, and shows how the gas turbine turned the Bell UH-1 Huey into a battlefield system large enough to need its own escort. The AH-1 Cobra was not simply a Huey with more weapons.
