Pux Fila – HAVEN
I've always believed that one of the nicest things you can offer someone you love is the feeling that they have a place in your life where they're genuinely wanted. Somewhere they can be themselves, without having to prove anything or wonder whether they belong.
But what happens when that person starts thinking about leaving? When you still see a future together, while they're no longer so sure? I've often wondered how you tell someone that what they're searching for might already be right beside them, without making them feel they have to stay.
That's the thought behind *HAVEN*. There's a lot of tenderness in it, but also that uncomfortable feeling of knowing you could lose someone you still want in your life.
Musically, I wanted HAVEN to carry that contrast I've been developing throughout the Pux Fila project: a beautiful, tender electronic melody living alongside the restless energy of Drum & Bass and the occasional fury of Dubstep.
The melodic foundation is built around warm electronic tones, flowing arpeggios and gradually evolving harmonies. I wanted those elements to remain recognizable throughout the entire song, even when the rhythm becomes much more intense. The fast, rolling Drum & Bass percussion gives the music a sense of urgency, while the halftime Dubstep passages interrupt that momentum with heavier, slower beats and deep bass growls.
I particularly like what happens when those two rhythmic approaches meet the softer melody. The music can be almost comforting one moment and suddenly become restless or angry the next. To me, that feels quite natural when you're trying to hold on to someone who may already have decided to leave.
The vocal was important to me as well. I wanted it to sound warm and close, almost as though someone were singing those words directly to the person they were afraid of losing. During the final mix, I brought the voice slightly forward and added a little room reverb to give it some of the natural space you'd hear in a clear live recording.
I repeated the first two verses later in the song... by then, you've already heard the message, but hearing those same words again changes their weight. Don't turn away, don't leave tonight. It's the same request, made again because the person singing still hasn't found a better way to say what matters.
The instrumental keeps developing around those repeated lines. The arpeggios and harmonies preserve the tenderness of the original melody, while the changes between fast DnB rhythms and halftime Dubstep give the arrangement its tension. I wanted the heavier sections to express the frustration that sometimes comes with loving someone and realizing you have nothing to say over their decision.
And that's why I called it *HAVEN*.
Because when you tell someone that their place is beside you, you're also offering them something of yourself. A place where they can feel loved, wanted and safe.
Whether they choose to stay is another story.
Lyrics:
Don't turn away, don't leave tonight,
There's still a place for you with me.
We have a love that's worth the fight,
And so much more that we could be.
You think you'll find a better place,
But what we have is something real.
Don't let our memories fade away,
Or lose the love we used to feel.
Don't turn away, don't leave tonight,
There's still a place for you with me.
We have a love that's worth the fight,
And so much more that we could be.
You think you'll find a better place,
But what we have is something real.
Don't let our memories fade away,
Or lose the love we used to feel.
I won't pretend that we're the same,
Or promise skies forever blue.
But through the storms and through the rain,
My heart will still belong to you.
