China Just Mass-Produced a Memory Chip — Should Samsung Be Worried?

hina's memory-chip industry just made a major move. CXMT has announced that its fifth-generation DRAM platform has entered mass production, marking another step in the company's push into advanced memory manufacturing. The global DRAM industry has long been dominated by companies such as Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron. But CXMT is now increasing its manufacturing capabilities, and its new G5 platform is designed to improve memory density and wafer output. CXMT says the platform uses an 11.95nm active-area half-pitch and can produce at least 50% more gross dies per wafer than its previous-generation platform. The company has also introduced new 24Gb LPDDR5X products aimed at applications including smartphones and portable electronics. But this doesn't mean Samsung has suddenly lost its position. The bigger question is what happens if CXMT continues improving its technology, manufacturing capacity, yield, and product range over the next several years. Because memory chips are everywhere — inside smartphones, laptops, servers, cars, gaming systems, cloud infrastructure, and AI data centers.
