Moving to Florida from California or New York is a bigger financial and lifestyle change than most people expect, and in this video we put all three states side by side — taxes, home prices, weather, and the everyday things nobody mentions until you get here.
We're Danielle Gladding and Alison Kanter, a mother-daughter real estate team on Florida's Gulf Coast. Danielle came to Sarasota as a child and has been selling real estate here since 1981, a broker since 1987. Alison was born and raised right here in Sarasota. Together we help families moving to Sarasota, Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands, Lakewood Ranch, and across Sarasota and Manatee County find the right community for the life they actually want.
🏡 Search every home for sale in Sarasota, Longboat Key, Lido Key, and Lakewood Ranch with live, real-time MLS listings at DanielleGladdingCo.com — updated the moment a home hits the market, so you're never looking at listings that already sold.
Why do so many people move to Florida from California and New York? Taxes are usually the first reason. Florida has no state income tax, no state estate tax, and no inheritance tax. California's top income tax rate is over thirteen percent, the highest in the country, and New York tops out around ten and a half percent, with a separate New York City income tax stacked on top for city residents. Everyone's tax picture is different, so talk with your own CPA or tax advisor before you make a move.
Then there is what a home costs. A typical California home runs somewhere around eight hundred thousand dollars and up depending on which report you read, and a one-bedroom in Manhattan regularly asks seven figures. Sarasota waterfront carries a real price too, but dollar for dollar you get more home, more land, and more light — and a boat dock instead of a parking space you rent. Property taxes here are moderate, and the homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary residence. There is also a property tax amendment proposed for the November 2026 Florida ballot — it is proposed only, not law, and it would have to pass first.
We also cover Sarasota weather and roughly 250 sunny days a year, the summer trade-off from June through September, hurricane season handled as prepare-don't-panic, and the culture you do not have to give up here: the Asolo Rep, the Ringling, Selby Gardens, the opera, the ballet, and the symphony.
