Welcome to Wolf Data, from 1970 to 2026, nuclear power grew from a relatively small source of electricity into a major component of the global energy system. Nuclear generation expanded rapidly during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s as the United States, France, the Soviet Union, Japan, Germany, Canada and other industrialized countries constructed large reactor fleets. Our World in Data The United States eventually became the world's largest nuclear electricity producer and has maintained that position into the modern era. In 2025, the United States generated approximately 785 TWh of nuclear electricity, compared with about 488 TWh in China, which has rapidly emerged as its largest challenger. Ember France remains another nuclear powerhouse and generated nearly 69% of its electricity from nuclear power in 2025, one of the highest shares worldwide. Our World in Data China continues constructing reactors at a much faster pace than most other countries, while Russia, South Korea, Canada, Japan and several European nations remain major producers. This 1970–2026 timeline follows how nuclear electricity production shifted between countries over more than five decades, from the early nuclear expansion to the modern rise of China. ⚛️⚡🌍 ⛲Sources: ▫️Our World in Data ▫️Energy Institute ▫️Ember ▫️International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ▫️U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) 💻Editor: ▫️Filmora 🖼️Thumbnails: ▫️Canva Countries featured in the video: United States China France Russia South Korea Japan Canada Spain India Ukraine Sweden UAE United Kingdom Finland Czechia Belgium Pakistan Switzerland Slovakia Belarus Hungary Brazil Bulgaria Argentina South Africa Romania Mexico Iran Slovenia Netherlands Taiwan Armenia Soviet Union Germany West Germany Czechoslovakia Lithuania East Germany Italy Yugoslavia Kazakhstan
