Lil' Chuco: A Zootsuit Story

June 3 marks the anniversary of the Zoot Suit Riots, a pivotal moment in Los Angeles history that began in 1943. Over several days, U.S. servicemen, police officers, and white civilians violently targeted young Mexican American, African American, and Filipino American men, many of whom wore flamboyant zoot suits. This style had become a symbol of cultural identity and pride. These attacks were fueled by racial prejudice and wartime tensions, leading to over 150 injuries and more than 500 arrests. In recent years, the City of Los Angeles has taken steps to acknowledge this dark chapter: in 2023, the City Council formally apologized to the communities affected and established June 3–9 as "Zoot Suit Heritage Week" to honor the resilience and cultural contributions of those who endured the violence.
