How a suicide hotline call became a 90 Minute Drama w/ John Murlowski - #16

A personal story can become a powerful film if you know how to shape it. Director John Murlowski discusses how a real hotline experience inspired On the Line, and why turning something deeply personal into a cinematic drama took careful choices. In this episode of Director Talk Film, host James Blanco talks with John about finding the emotional core of a story, moving beyond a literal retelling, and cutting material that distracts from the heart of the film. John also shares how he got started with Super 8, built experience making educational films, and landed his first feature by presenting a detailed visual pitch. You’ll also hear how John and co-writer Stephen Lawton reshaped the story, how the team made an ambitious feature on a limited budget, and why using the gear you have and trusting your collaborators can help you focus on what matters most: the story and performances. In this conversation: Turning a real experience into a cinematic drama Finding the right distance from personal material Making a first feature pitch stand out Using story structure without losing emotional honesty Cutting subplots to keep a film focused Planning a production around time, budget, and available gear John’s advice to care about every part of filmmaking A thoughtful conversation for filmmakers, screenwriters, indie creators, and anyone interested in the craft behind emotionally resonant films.
