Take Up Less Space

I learned how to read the room Before I learned myself I knew when to speak I knew when not to I could feel the smallest change A breath A look A door closed differently And I would adjust Take up less space Don’t make it difficult Don’t give them a reason Don’t become a problem I learned to need very little Or at least to say I did Every disappointment got smaller Every answer became It’s fine It’s fine It’s fine It’s fine After a while people believe you Take up less space Don’t ask for too much Carry your own weight Don’t let it show I became very good at disappearing Without actually leaving Still in the room Still answering Still doing everything right Nobody noticed Neither did I And everybody says I’m calm Because I rarely make a sound They call it patience They call it strength I don’t know what to call it Take up less space Don’t ask for too much Don’t need reassurance Don’t become a problem And then somebody asks me What do you want? And I have nothing Nothing Not because I don’t want anything I just can’t find where I put it SAY NOTHING! NEED NOTHING! EXPECT NOTHING! DON’T REACT! BE REASONABLE! MAKE IT SMALLER! LET IT PASS! Again Take up less space Take up less No I hear the word before I understand that it came from me No Nothing happens No door slams No one leaves The room doesn’t collapse No And suddenly I understand I spent years taking up less space Making everything smaller Making myself smaller Until one day I looked around And there was almost nothing left to make smaller.
