Black Eyes

It’s always there. Somewhere behind my eyes. Waiting. Then sometimes they turn black. Completely. I know when it happens. It isn’t anger. It’s something colder. The mind goes quiet. The edges sharpen. I see too much. It’s an eclipse. The light goes. All of it. And I feel at home here. My eyes adjust. Nothing moves without me noticing. I hear what wasn’t said. I see where the story bends. What the night was supposed to hide reveals itself. NO HESITATION. NO DOUBT. NO MAYBE. Just that terrible clean certainty. Quiet. Patient. Watching. Watching. Watching. Watching. I don’t need to move. Nothing gets past me. Too much of it comes through. So I find some noise. Something outside myself. Anything before those eyes turn inward. Because that’s what scares me. Not the darkness. How natural it feels. How still I can become. How long I can wait. Until eventually there is nothing left to hunt but me.
