Free Gustav Klimt-inspired Tree of Life watercolor lesson for kids — a directed-draw painting from Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway, designed specifically for fourth-grade students. Standards-aligned, runs about 35 minutes start to finish. A great beginner watercolor lesson.
In this free art lesson, students learn to paint a Tree of Life inspired by Austrian Art Nouveau master Gustav Klimt. Kim guides students step-by-step through taping clean borders, outlining and filling in a purple tree trunk with swirling branches, adding decorative details to the trunk, painting a bright background, and finishing with small flower planter boxes. Students are introduced to Klimt's signature golden, decorative style and his most famous painting, "The Kiss."

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian painter and one of the most important figures of the Art Nouveau movement. He's famous for paintings filled with gold, swirling patterns, and decorative detail — his most recognized work is "The Kiss" (1907–1908), which shows two figures wrapped in a glowing golden cloak. His painting "Tree of Life" inspires this lesson; its swirling branches, jewel-like patterns, and bold colors made it one of the most beloved Art Nouveau images of all time. Klimt shows kids that art can be patterned, decorative, and completely full — every inch can sing.
