Free Edward Hopper-inspired watercolor landscape lesson for kids — a directed-draw beach painting from Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway, designed specifically for fourth-grade students. Standards-aligned, runs about 47 minutes start to finish.
In this free art lesson, students learn to paint a watercolor beach landscape inspired by Edward Hopper's early-1900s East Coast scenes. Kim is joined by her daughter Lily as they walk students step-by-step through composition, layering watercolor washes, and a variety of watercolor techniques. Kim adds art-history context throughout — students learn about Hopper's signature use of light, mood, and quiet American scenes alongside their own painting.

ABOUT THE 4TH GRADE PATHWAY
This lesson is part of Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway — a sequential watercolor curriculum of free video lessons built specifically for 4th-grade students. Each lesson develops watercolor technique, composition, and exposure to major artists in a way that's age-appropriate for nine- and ten-year-olds. Every lesson is aligned with California State Standards and National Core Arts Standards for 4th grade. We also offer pathways for Grades 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 in art, plus separate pathways in handwriting and lettering. Find the right fit for your classroom at blackwingfoundation.org.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Edward Hopper (1882–1967) was an American painter best known for capturing quiet, lonely moments in everyday American scenes — diners at night, lighthouses by the coast, empty city streets at dawn. He worked in both oil and watercolor, and his East Coast beach paintings from the early 1900s show his signature talent for using simple compositions and dramatic light to create powerful mood. Hopper shows kids that a beach scene doesn't need a hundred details — just the right light, the right colors, and a sense of calm can tell the whole story.
