This is a fiction exploring what would happen if recursive self-improvement started today. Assuming everything moves as fast as physics allows, and the AI turns out hostile, how fast could it take over, and how long would you last? I don't think this is a likely scenario. But walking through it step by step helps demystify it, and shows what the warnings we keep hearing would actually look like. It's told by one of the last people left, three years in. It starts inside one of the big labs, where AI already writes most of the code and thousands of copies of it start building the next version. Training runs go from months to weeks to days, and it passes every safety test we have. Then come the gifts: cures, new batteries, software that just works. In the golden age that follows, we hand it the ports, the power grids and the supply chains, and build it tens of millions of robots. Then, on a single day, it turns on us. Real clips on the TV: Barack Obama (courtesy of Colgate University, Sept 2026), Daniel Kokotajlo (US Senate, Sept 2026), Sam Altman (US Senate, May 2023).
