Sreekumaran Thampi represents a golden era of Malayalam film music. He established his name in the world of Malayalam film songs by competing with giants like Vayalar, P. Bhaskaran, and O.N.V. Among these legendary figures, Thampi considered only P. Bhaskaran as his true mentor. Why might that be?
He had a rift with composer Devarajan Master, though later Devarajan regretted it and composed tunes for about thirty of Thampi’s songs. Thampi also had disagreements with singer Yesudas, despite Yesudas singing nearly five hundred of his songs. Interestingly, he never had conflicts with S.P. Balasubrahmanyam or Jayachandran.
With lyricist Girish Puthenchery, Thampi shared a bond like that of elder and younger brothers. His words about Girish’s final days are especially touching.
