Sreekumaran Thampi, once known as the poet of romance in the hearts of Malayalis, is still sharing stories — the story of his own life and also the story of Malayalam cinema. He speaks about many legendary figures of Malayalam cinema and reveals stories that have never been told before. Out of the more than one thousand songs written by Thampi, over five hundred were sung by K. J. Yesudas. In fact, Sreekumaran Thampi is the lyricist for whom Yesudas has sung the highest number of songs. Alongside legendary lyricists like Vayalar Ramavarma, P. Bhaskaran, and O. N. V. Kurup, Thampi stood tall as one of the golden pillars in the history of Malayalam film songs. Beyond being a poet and lyricist, this engineering graduate was also a director of around thirty films, a scriptwriter and producer of nearly eighty films, and a novelist as well. In this interview, he answers an important question — whether his artistic journey, built through competition with great masters, received the recognition it truly deserved. Thampi Sir, who was closely associated with the early phase of the Mammootty and Mohanlal era in Malayalam cinema, also shares many untold stories, including how he was appointed chairman of the jury that selected both actors for National Awards.
