In this video, I want to talk about something many parents may do without realizing the long-term impact it can have on a child: insulting, comparing, shaming, or humiliating them in the name of discipline.
I believe a child’s dignity is the foundation of their self-worth. When we repeatedly tell children that they are useless, careless, weak, disappointing, or not as good as someone else, we are not simply correcting their behavior. We may be shaping the way they see themselves.
As parents, we often use shame, guilt, comparison, or harsh words because we want our children to improve. But I believe discipline should never come at the cost of dignity.
In this video, I explain why we need to correct a child’s behavior without attacking their identity, why comparing them with siblings, cousins, or other children rarely creates lasting motivation, and why parents must learn to communicate their fears and concerns without passing that emotional burden onto the child.
I also discuss why respect cannot be taught through disrespect. If we want our children to value people, relationships, resources, discipline, and life itself, we have to model those values ourselves.
The goal of parenting is not to break a child’s ego or spirit. It is to help them develop self-worth, accountability, discipline, values, and the ability to respect both themselves and others.
Before correcting your child, ask yourself one simple question: are my words going to create clarity, or are they going to leave a scar?
It is never too late to change the way we communicate with our children, rebuild a relationship, and create a home where firmness, warmth, discipline, truth, and dignity can exist together.
