【About Kamakura】
Kamakura is a historic town in Japan, known for its temples, shrines, mountains, and traditional streets.
Located just south of Tokyo, Kamakura was once the political center of Japan and the seat of the Kamakura Shogunate, established in the late 12th century.
Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Kamakura developed as a natural fortress and became an important center of politics, religion, and culture.
Today, ancient temples and shrines coexist with quiet forests and the streets of a modern Japanese town.
【The Journey】
This journey takes me through the historic heart of Kamakura, exploring some of the places that reveal its history, spirituality, and natural landscape.
I visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Hasedera, and the Great Buddha before entering the forest along the Daibutsu Hiking Trail.
The trail leads through the hills of Kamakura to Zeniarai Benten, followed by a walk through the lively streets of Komachi.
Along the way, the journey moves between temples, shrines, forest trails, and the everyday atmosphere of modern Kamakura.
【Hachimangu Shrine】
Hachimangu Shrine is one of the most important shrines in Kamakura and has been closely connected with the history of the town for centuries.
The shrine was established by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, and became the spiritual and political center of medieval Kamakura.
Its long approach leads through the heart of the city, connecting the shrine with the streets and landscapes that developed around it.
Today, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu remains an important place of worship and one of the defining landmarks of Kamakura.
【Hasedera Temple】
Hasedera Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located on the hills of western Kamakura.
The temple is particularly known for its large wooden statue of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion.
Built into the hillside, Hasedera is surrounded by gardens, ponds, and wooded paths, creating a quiet atmosphere within the historic town.
The temple reflects the close relationship between Buddhism, nature, and the mountain landscape that has shaped Kamakura for centuries.
【The Great Buddha of Kamakura】
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is one of Japan’s most famous Buddhist statues.
The bronze statue of Amida Buddha was created in the 13th century and originally stood inside a temple hall.
The hall was later destroyed by natural disasters, leaving the statue standing outdoors.
Today, the Great Buddha remains at Kotoku-in Temple, surrounded by the mountains of Kamakura and visited by people from around the world.
【Daibutsu Hiking Trail】
The Daibutsu Hiking Trail is one of the walking routes through the forested hills surrounding Kamakura.
The trail connects the area around the Great Buddha with the northern part of the town, passing through quiet forests and natural landscapes.
Away from the busy streets and major tourist sites, the trail offers a different view of Kamakura, where the surrounding mountains become part of the journey.
These hills have played an important role in the history of Kamakura, helping to protect the town and shaping the way people traveled through the region.
【Zeniarai Benten】
Zeniarai Benten is a small shrine located in a narrow valley surrounded by the mountains of Kamakura.
The shrine is associated with the worship of Ugafukujin, a deity connected with water and prosperity.
Visitors traditionally wash their money in the spring water at the shrine, believing that doing so can bring financial good fortune.
Hidden among the rocks and forest, Zeniarai Benten has a very different atmosphere from the larger shrines of central Kamakura.
It is one of the many places where the natural landscape and spiritual traditions of Kamakura remain closely connected.
【Komachi Dori Street】
Komachi Dori Street is one of the busiest streets in central Kamakura, connecting the area around Kamakura Station with Hachimangu Shrine.
The street is lined with shops, restaurants, traditional sweets, souvenirs, and local food.
While much of Kamakura preserves its historic atmosphere, Komachi Street shows another side of the town — a lively meeting place for local life and visitors from around the world.
Walking through Komachi provides a contrast to the quiet temples and forest trails encountered earlier in the journey.
