What if just 7 miles could transform transportation, tourism, and quality of life in St. Augustine?
In this video, I walk the abandoned rail corridor connecting Elkton to St. Augustine—the missing link in the Palatka to St. Augustine Trail. This gap has been planned and approved for years, yet remains unfinished nearly two decades later.
Completing the gap will:
Provide real alternative transportation for residents
Connect St. Augustine to Hastings and Palatka
Link into a growing regional trail network, the 47 mile Lake Butler Trail and 250 mile River-to-Sea loop
Boost economic development
Improve affordability by reducing car dependence
Enhance livability with a world-class recreational amenity
Support sustainability via reduced emissions
If local leaders are serious about mobility, sustainability, and long-term impact—this would be a good project.
𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘: While info is tough to find, viewers have alerted us that there is an approved plan to create a bike trail along 214 and Alan Nease Rd. that will connect downtown to the existing bike trail. Apparently, the rail line is still used to service a concrete business, though infrequently. While this will not be nearly as transformative, it is something. Surprisingly, there are many people who are opposed to dedicated, safe biking infrastructure.
As someone who has an anti-authority bent, it seems that one of the best ways to rebel against the status-quo and express your individual freedom in St. Augustine is to ride a bike. Since the culture and institutions are vehemently opposed, few things are more 'punk-rock', anti-establishment than riding a bike. Unfortunately, it is one of the most dangerous places to do so.
