Why can humans throw so fast?
A chimpanzee is stronger than you. So why can a human throw a ball dramatically faster and farther?
The answer isn't raw strength. It's the strange combination of anatomy, elastic energy, shoulder mobility and torso rotation that turned the human arm into something surprisingly close to a biological slingshot.
In this video, we explore the evolution of human throwing, human biomechanics, the human shoulder, chimpanzee throwing ability, and the anatomical changes that may have helped our ancestors become powerful long-distance throwers.
We look at research by Neil Roach and his colleagues on the mechanics of throwing, including the role of the shoulder, torso rotation, elastic energy and the structure of the upper arm.
We also explore one of evolution's stranger tradeoffs: the same unstable shoulder that allows humans to throw with incredible speed also makes the joint vulnerable to injury.
And then there's the bigger question.
Why did humans evolve this ability in the first place?
One leading hypothesis connects powerful throwing with hunting and the development of early human technology — although exactly how natural selection shaped the ability remains an active area of scientific discussion.
