5 Sharks take on the Mach Loop | Legal and safe low-level flying has never been SO MUCH FUN!

FIVE Sharks. One of the UK’s most famous low-level flying routes. And a Sunday morning we won’t forget in a hurry 😁😁😁😁😁 Five Shark owner pilots headed to Wales to experience the legendary Mach Loop – a route used during the week by the RAF for low-level flying training. Four aircraft from the Shark Aero German community joined UK Shark owner Neil Fleming and co-pilot Catherine Ruddick at Caernarfon Airfield (EGCK). Early on Sunday morning, the five Sharks launched for two unforgettable circuits of the Mach Loop. And fortunately, there were cameras waiting for us. Photographers from the Facebook group 'Mach Loop, Lake District & Low Level Photography Group' came out to capture some fantastic images of the Sharks in action. The UK position: The baseline rule, SERA.5005(f), prohibits VFR flight below 500 ft above ground or water, and below 1,000 ft above the highest obstacle within 600 m when over congested areas of cities, towns or settlements, or over an open-air assembly of persons. The UK CAA has, however, issued a general permission under SERA.5005(f) (Official Record Series 4) which relaxes the first of these. The effect is that in the UK an aircraft may be flown below 500 ft above the ground or water *provided that it is never flown closer than 500 ft to any person, vessel, vehicle or structure*, and provided it is not over a congested area or an open-air assembly. The 500 ft is a distance in any direction — vertical, horizontal or slant — not simply a height. The requirement to be able to make an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface continues to apply at all times. Outside the UK: Most EASA member states have not issued an equivalent permission, so SERA.5005(f)(2) applies as written: an absolute minimum of 500 ft above ground or water. Several states impose stricter national minimum safe altitudes on top of that. What you see in this video would be an offence in most of Europe. It is your responsibility as pilot-in-command to know and comply with the law of the state you are flying in, and with any additional restrictions such as danger areas, military low flying systems, bird sanctuaries, national parks and noise-sensitive areas. Training. Low flying is an unforgiving discipline. It compresses decision time, degrades your ability to recover from an error, and exposes you to wires, terrain, turbulence and visual illusions that do not exist at normal cruising levels. It should not be attempted on the basis of a video. Do not fly low unless you have been trained to do so by a professional flying instructor who has substantial personal experience of low flying, who has been formally trained to teach low flying, and who has substantial experience of teaching it.
