On Saturday he set the first ever lap in the one minute twenty-nines around that circuit — a pole position nobody in the history of the venue had managed. Marc Marquez himself named him as the favourite for Sunday's Grand Prix. Then, on the opening lap, leading his home race from pole, he crashed at Turn Thirteen in front of his own grandstand. He was unhurt. His championship, in all likelihood, was not. He went into the weekend twenty-four points behind.
