Folk Songs From Places That Never Existed
Karzan, Persian Salt Desert — 1284
Beyond the old caravan roads, where salt covered the earth like pale stone and water was worth more than silver, stood the imagined settlement of Karzan.
At its edge was a single freshwater well.
For generations, one family was entrusted with guarding it — measuring every bowl, filling the skins of passing caravans, and making certain that no traveler entered the salt desert without water.
But the keeper followed one strange rule.
Every evening, after the final traveler had been served, he filled a copper bowl with clean water and poured it directly onto the dry earth.
In a land where no drop could be wasted, no one understood why.
Some believed the water belonged to travelers who had died beyond the old road.
Others whispered that something beneath the salt was thirsty, and that the well remained sweet only because the keeper remembered to pay its share.
The keeper never explained.
This song imagines the final years of that tradition — a desert folk ballad about scarcity, memory, obligation, and a man who understood that not every debt belongs to the living.
The music draws from an imagined Persian and Silk Road folk world, using oud-like plucked strings, ney, bowed spike fiddle, sparse santur, frame drum, hand percussion and low sustained drones.
Around the song remain the sounds of Karzan itself: desert wind, rope tightening around an old well beam, the creak of a wooden bucket, distant camel bells and the faint metallic resonance of a copper bowl.
After the final sung verse, the music continues instrumentally as night settles over the salt plain — the caravan fires growing distant, the well standing silent, and one dark circle of water slowly disappearing into the earth.
