𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞
The roots of the toponym Monte Fiascone (where "monte", hill, is probably due to the hilly nature of the inhabited area) are perhaps to be traced back to the Latin *mons faliscorum*, with reference to the Falisci, who would have landed in the area after the destruction of the various centers of 'ager faliscus by the Romans.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐬
Two sacred temple areas date back to the Etruscan period. Traces of more ancient civilizations have been found between Montefiascone and Viterbo, more precisely in the Rinaldone area, seat of the Aeneolithic civilization.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬
Montefiascone enjoyed better fortunes in the Roman period, thanks to an efficient road system. Some findings in the area of the basilica of San Flaviano would suggest that the initial Roman nucleus was located in this area.

It seems that Montefiascone (with the name of *Mons flaconis*) began to appear in official documents starting from the year 853.

In the Middle Ages the center, together with its small fortress, began to assume considerable strategic importance, by virtue of its dominant position over the valley.
In 1111, Henry V and his court passed through Montefiascone, headed for Rome: according to legend, Johannes Defuk would be right behind him when he was "conquered" by the goodness of the local wine.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐫
In the following years Montefiascone became one of the most important centers of the church.
In 1222 St. Francis passed through here.
In 1463 the Rocca had lost its prestige, since the seat of the papal kingdom had been moved first to Viterbo, and then definitively to Rome.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞
In 1590 the fortress fell to pieces, but was never restored. In 1657 the city was struck by the plague, but every precaution was in vain.
In 1958 the Wine Fair was established. The Fair, still today one of the main events of the Montefiasconese summer (held every year in August), celebrates the historic agro-wine vocation of the city and its renowned d.o.c. East! East!! East!!!.
