Five testimonies I've collected since 2015 — a widow, a chaplain, a records clerk, an airman, and a family that never moved — keep answering the same unasked question the same way.
Across four states and seventy years, a gray chooses one person, depends on them completely for a season or a single night, and then leaves in a way every witness who saw it misunderstood for the rest of their life. None of these five people ever met. None of them agree on almost anything else about what happened to them.
Tonight I'm laying all five side by side for the first time: the Nebraska family it returned to across three generations, the widow who fed it through a New Mexico winter, the airman it chose over every other guard assigned to it, the chaplain it spoke to only as it was dying, and the records clerk who spent thirty-two years erasing every trace of it except one photograph. Laid next to each other, their five accounts start answering a question none of them thought to ask out loud.
If something has never harmed anyone, chosen one caretaker every time, and used its only voice once, in the last ninety seconds of its life, what is it actually trying to do?
Why does every mark recorded on this gray sit on the left side of its body, except the earliest one on record?
What does it mean that a photograph kept back in 1972 and a duty log filed in 2011 describe, as far as I can tell, the same thing?
If it chose you tonight, and needed one season of your care before it left, would you give it?
On the public record: Roswell Army Air Field was renamed Walker Air Force Base on January 13, 1948. The 1994 Air Force report attributed the original Roswell debris to Project Mogul. A 1995 federal report found that Roswell Army Air Field's own administrative records from 1945 to 1949 had been destroyed with no documented authority. The 1997 report "The Roswell Report: Case Closed" attributed decades of body testimony to anthropomorphic test dummies dropped in high-altitude balloon tests. The USAF Chaplain Service was founded May 10, 1949.
