11 March 1966. A teaching hospital in the West Midlands. Eleven people in a lecture theatre watching a four-minute admission film of a thirty-one-year-old patient.
When it ended, nobody spoke for close to a minute. The consultant stood, said the department would return to the case, and closed the session with no discussion at all.
I traced three of those eleven. One recorded an interview in 1998. One wrote a letter in 1991. One is ninety-one and still has the lecture programme in a drawer.
All three describe the first three minutes identically. Then the patient turns her head toward something off-camera — and from that second their accounts are three different events. One has her speaking at length to someone not in the room. One has her collapsing. One has her standing completely still.
The film was believed destroyed for forty years. It surfaced in 2021 in a dead clinician's estate — with eleven seconds physically cut out of the middle of a continuous shot.
In November I watched it with the ninety-one-year-old. She hadn't seen it since 1966, and she had spent fifty-eight years assuming she'd imagined what she saw.
Two minutes in, she put her hand on my arm and asked me to stop and run it back.
She wasn't looking at the patient. She was looking at the wall behind her.
⚠️ Narrative fiction. Names, places, and events are fictionalized.
