In 1995, Hubble pointed at a patch of sky so dark it seemed like absolute nothing - and found 3,000 galaxies hiding in the void. For three decades, we believed we had squeezed every photon of information from that legendary emptiness. Then James Webb turned its infrared eyes to the same spot, stared for nearly 100 hours straight, and what emerged from the darkness Hubble could never see changes everything we thought we knew about the deep universe.
In this mesmerizing space documentary, we explore the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey - and what happens when you refuse to accept that darkness means absence.
In this documentary, we break it all down:
Webb's 100-hour exposure - the longest single-filter extragalactic observation ever attempted
Over 2,500 sources revealed, including 100+ extremely red galaxies completely invisible to Hubble
Dusty starbursts hidden behind curtains of interstellar dust billions of light-years away
Mysterious "little red dots" that may contain supermassive black holes from cosmic dawn
MIRI dropouts - phantom objects that vanish at every wavelength shorter than 5 micrometers
Darkness is never absence. It is only the limit of the current eye.
