Can we build a modern city without destroying the natural environment that keeps it alive?
In this important environmental awareness live session, Teacher Usman discusses the future of F-9 Park (Fatima Jinnah Park), Islamabad, amid concerns about proposed development and the potential removal of trees to modernise the park.
F-9 Park is an important green space in Pakistan’s capital. Its trees, vegetation, open land and natural soil contribute to urban biodiversity, local cooling, rainwater infiltration and the quality of life of people living in Islamabad.
If development plans involve cutting mature trees, we must ask some serious questions: Can new plantations replace the ecological benefits of established trees? What happens to rainwater when natural soil is replaced with concrete? And how will Islamabad cope with rising temperatures, heatwaves, changing rainfall patterns and increasing pressure on groundwater resources?
🌳 1. Why Must We Protect F-9 Park?
Mature trees provide shade, store carbon, support birds and other wildlife, and help reduce the urban heat island effect. Their roots, together with healthy soil and vegetation, contribute to the movement of rainwater into the ground.
Removing established trees may reduce these benefits for years while replacement trees grow. That is why environmental impact assessments, transparent planning and the protection of mature trees are essential considerations before major development takes place.
💧 2. F-9 Park and Underground Water Recharge
Every year, rain falls on Islamabad. Some of this water runs off into drains, while some infiltrates the soil and may replenish groundwater.
Natural green spaces can help rainwater infiltrate where soil conditions, vegetation and drainage allow it. When permeable land is replaced by impermeable surfaces, runoff can increase and opportunities for groundwater recharge may decrease.
We need to protect the natural areas that help Islamabad manage rainwater. Any proposed redevelopment should disclose its expected effects on tree cover, permeable land, drainage and groundwater recharge.
🌡️ 3. Can Islamabad Fight Climate Change by Increasing Concrete?
Pakistan is experiencing serious climate-related challenges, including extreme heat, changing rainfall patterns, water stress and urban flooding.
Expanding concrete surfaces without adequate green infrastructure can intensify local heat and increase stormwater runoff. Urban trees, parks, wetlands, permeable surfaces and rainwater harvesting should therefore be integral parts of sustainable city planning.
Modern development should improve people's lives while protecting the natural systems on which cities depend.
🐦 4. Protect Biodiversity and Our Natural Ecosystem
Urban parks provide habitat and food for birds, insects and other wildlife. Mature trees and interconnected green spaces help maintain ecological functions within a growing city.
Before removing trees or transforming natural areas, decision-makers should consider biodiversity surveys, environmental assessments and practical alternatives that preserve existing vegetation.
🏙️ 5. Modernisation Without Environmental Destruction
We are not against development. We are asking for responsible, transparent and environmentally sustainable development.
Can Islamabad become a modern city while preserving its mature trees, natural soil, groundwater recharge and green spaces?
We should ask the relevant authorities to publicly share the development plan, the number and species of trees potentially affected, the environmental impact assessment, and the proposed alternatives. Development options should be evaluated for their long-term environmental and public benefits.
📢 6. What Can We Do as Responsible Citizens?
🌱 Raise awareness about the importance of urban forests.
🌱 Share verified information about F-9 Park and any proposed development.
🌱 Ask the relevant authorities for transparent environmental assessments and public consultation.
🌱 Support the protection of mature trees and natural green spaces.
🌱 Promote rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and sustainable urban planning.
🌱 Encourage development alternatives that minimise tree removal and preserve permeable land.
My Friends, this is not just about a park. It is about the kind of city we want to leave for our children.
We need clean air, cooler neighbourhoods, healthy ecosystems, groundwater security and green spaces where future generations can live and thrive.
Join Teacher Usman in this environmental awareness campaign. Watch, share and discuss the issue respectfully. Let us encourage decision-makers to consider nature, scientific evidence and the long-term interests of Islamabad's residents.
Development must serve people without ignoring the environment that sustains them.
