Umeda: Where Afternoon Light Meets Eternity | 115 Photos | Bach: Chaconne — Midori Through music, a fleeting moment in a city opens onto a far greater expanse of time. Umeda North Yard, Osaka, around four in the afternoon on October 12, 2026. This photographic film brings together 115 photographs taken there, accompanied by Bach’s Chaconne performed by Midori. In the afternoon light, the city lives in the present. Yet from the instant the shutter is released, the scene belongs to a time that will never return. A photograph preserves the city’s appearance, but also a moment encountered only by the person standing in that place, on that day. Midori’s Chaconne gives that moment a depth beyond the reach of words. Even among the established masters of our time, it is no exaggeration to say that she stands apart. For me, at least, the experience of her playing cannot possibly be contained in the idea of listening to a virtuoso’s skill. Listening to a single violin, I find myself face to face with the magnitude of music itself. Within that resonance, even familiar scenes of the city appear as though seen for the first time. Umeda, continually changing, and Bach, performed across the ages. Where the two meet, the afternoon of October 12, 2026 begins to acquire an expression that reaches beyond a record of the day. Photography gazes at what passes. Music touches what endures beneath it. One hundred and fifteen moments in Umeda North Yard around four in the afternoon, accompanied by Midori’s Chaconne.
