swcwalks, book1, walk42, Holmwood to Gomshall. 3/9/26

An 11 mile variation of this walk previously done in its original form in 2012. This version starts out at Dorking Deepdene, for logistical purposes, so introduces some new terrain, but reviews the original route, in reverse, from the hamlet of Friday Street. It was undertaken on a breezy afternoon with sunny intervals and sultry temperatures in the low 20s. After around a mile of urban walking through Dorking, the walker is soon at Milton Heath and the Nower to join the Greensand Way. This is followed all the way to Horsley Copse, near the village of Wotton. Lunch is had shortly afterwards, beside the old mill pond in the delightful hamlet of Friday Street. There is no longer a pub option here. Thereafter, the walker is walking the original walk, in reverse, through Abinger Bottom and across Wotton Common to Leith Hill and it's Tower cum kiosk. There are great views north to the Shard (not Canary Wharf, as mentioned on commentary) and the City, and the South Downs on the other side. More woodland walking, and scrambling, follows on the descent to Coldharbour. After this, the landscape is more pastoral for the remaining distance to Holmwood. A wonderfully wooded walk with decent paths today, and not too much interference from Gatwick Airport, given its proximity. With Gomshall only having a two-hourly train service, this variant might appeal to others wanting to view this delightful terrain from a different perspective. P.S. The two red/brown cattle were the local Wealden 'Sussex' breed.
