I had five hours to save the one job I'd wanted since I was nine. It was part-time, at the front desk of a little brick library two towns over. And the director told me, very kindly, what was in the way. My blazer. My good navy wool, the one I wore every Monday for about twenty years in a middle-school front office. She asked me to come back at three thirty. So I had till then to figure out what she meant.

I figured she meant too old. Well, I spent the whole day finding out how wrong I was. Dee made me button it in her kitchen and pointed at my middle. Rosa, two streets over, had me put my arms out like I was hugging somebody, and then she turned me around and started laughing at the back of my jacket. And my granddaughter Lily, sixteen and riding a school bus, picked out the jacket I'd walked right past.
WHAT THAT DAY TAUGHT ME ABOUT BLAZERS
Button it and look down. If the fabric pulls into an X at the button, it's too small.
Put your arms straight out, then up like you're reaching a shelf. Nothing should fight you.
Sleeves stop at your wrist bone, so a little of what's under them shows with your arms down.
Turn it around and check the back vent. If there's a big X of thread, cut it.
Wear a soft knit under it instead of a blouse buttoned to your chin.
That last one is mine, and you can try it tonight with the blazer you've already got. And if the pockets on a new jacket are stitched shut, Rosa leaves those alone. They keep the front flat. What the director really meant by "it's the blazer" had nothing to do with my age. Arlene at the front desk knew all along, and she told me around four o'clock, between a stack of holds and the candy canes.
