My sister Joanne stayed two days, and the morning she left I put half my closet in garbage bags. And the thing is, she never once told me to get rid of anything. She pulled into my driveway on a Thursday at four on the dot, and there wasn't a wrinkle on her. So she hung up her coat and opened my closet like the hood of a car she was thinking about buying, and every time she held something up, she told me what gave it away. I got a little sore about that, I'll be honest. Then I said something I shouldn't have. At eleven that night I found out what her gray sweater cost, and I'm not going to tell you here. You kind of have to hear it from her, at my kitchen table, with Mom's old button tin. Here's what she held up, more or less in order. A white T-shirt, which she held up to the window, and if you can see your hand through it, you put it back. After that came my yellow blouse, because shiny satin bounces light off every wrinkle and looks tired by lunch, and the matte stuff just looks calmer. She got to my sage cardigan next, which was a nice sweater with cheap gold buttons, and swapping buttons is about the cheapest fix there is. I'd worn a linen shirt with the folds still in it, so she got out a steamer at six in the morning. After breakfast it was the whole closet, sorted by color, because she owns three colors plus brown shoes and I own, well, I own two different oranges. And last, my boots and my bag, because heel tips are cheap and leather takes polish, and faux leather that's peeling you just can't fix. There's also Easter of 1983, and a picture I was sore about for forty-three years. There's the fish fry at the Legion hall, and Rosa taking in my pants, and heel tips in Sandusky. And the outfit I wore Friday night? I already owned all of it, every piece. On Dressed for Round Two I tell these as stories. My name's Maggie Brennan, I worked a school front office up on Lake Erie for a long time, and now that I'm retired I'm figuring out what to wear to one new thing after another. This time I had help I didn't ask for. So if you've got a Joanne in the family, or if you are the Joanne, this one is for you. And it's for anybody who stands in front of a full closet and can't find two things that go together, because that was me on Thursday. I just know what she showed me over two days, and I figure some of it might work for you too. ABOUT THIS VIDEO This is a fictional story. Some footage is stock or AI-generated illustration.
