30 Days of Collecting Bags at the Dump — What I Found Inside

For 30 days I collected bags people threw away at the dump — today I'm opening them all to see what's inside! I work at the dump, and for a whole month I collected the bags people tossed in the trash: purses, wallets, even a pink backpack. Today I grab my main tool, a knife for cutting linings, and open them all on camera. It's a lottery: cash, jewelry or nothing at all. The very first purse gives me coins and an old Nokia slider, a phone people once only dreamed about. A tiny locked pouch I was sure held keys turns out to hide a heavy chain that looks like silver. Then a wallet, and yes, there's money inside, plus an unusual ring... or is it an earring? A small handbag holds a women's watch, a Kinder penguin and a ring with a hallmark. Then a second, beautiful watch, and under the lining a lighter shaped like a matchbox and a scorpion pin. The bigger bag surprises me twice: what looks like pearl earrings and a ring, then a straight razor with a maker's mark in the side pocket, and it still cuts perfectly. The pink backpack is full of dinosaurs and race cars, plus an Alcatel phone. I cut open another lining and find pills, a coin... and a rolled-up bundle of dollars. A lucky dollar! But I saved the heaviest bag for last. Inside: a strange collection of three button phones and a butterfly brooch that looks like gold. Is it real?
