Chapter 1: The “I”-Thought — The Beginning of the Spiritual Journey | Robert Adams What if the greatest obstacle between you and freedom is a single thought? “I.” In this opening chapter, we begin the spiritual journey by questioning the identity we have taken for granted throughout our lives. Who am I? Am I this body? Am I this mind? Am I my name, history, possessions, emotions, successes and failures? According to the teachings of Robert Adams, suffering begins with identification—the belief that “I” am a separate person. From this identification arise fear, desire, attachment, anxiety and the endless search for happiness outside ourselves. But what if the “I” you have always believed yourself to be is not who you truly are? The deeper question is: Where does the “I” come from? This chapter introduces Self-Inquiry (Atma Vichara), the direct path associated with Sri Ramana Maharshi. Whenever a thought appears, instead of becoming lost in the thought, turn your attention back toward the one experiencing it. Ask: “To whom does this thought come?” The answer is: “To me.” Then ask: “Who am I?” The purpose is not to find an intellectual or philosophical answer. Self-Inquiry directs attention toward the Source of the “I” itself. As the chapter unfolds, Robert Adams explores the difference between the personal “I” and Consciousness, pointing toward the understanding that you are not merely the body or mind, but the awareness in which body and mind appear. We also explore Pure Awareness, Silence, Maya, the nature of the mind, the Here and Now, surrender, happiness, and abiding in the Self. ✨ In This Chapter, We Explore: • What is the “I”-thought? • Why does identification with the body create suffering? • Who am I? • Are you really the body or the mind? • What is Consciousness? • Where does the personal “I” come from? • What is Self-Inquiry / Atma Vichara? • How does “To whom does this thought come?” work? • What is the Source of the “I”? • Self-Inquiry vs. meditation • What does Silence really mean? • What is Maya? • What does it mean to abide in the “I” and the Self? • How can we remain centered in the Here and Now? • What does it mean to trust the Power that knows the way? 🧘 A Simple Self-Inquiry Practice Take a moment and notice the next thought that appears. Ask yourself: “To whom does this thought come?” Notice the answer: “To me.” Then ask: “Who am I?” Don't rush to create an intellectual answer. Simply observe. Remain still. Turn your attention toward the Source of the “I.” This practice can be brought into ordinary daily life—not only during formal meditation. 🕉️ The Here and Now Another important theme is learning to remain centered in the present moment rather than becoming consumed by the past or future. The teaching points toward Consciousness, Pure Awareness and the eternal Now as the ground of freedom. Near the end of the chapter, three fundamental points are presented for contemplation—concerning identification with the body and mind, remaining in the Here and Now, and the recognition that the Self is already free. 💬 Question for You How many times did you use the word “I” today without questioning who that “I” really is?
