Huron Heights London, Ontario | Neighbourhood Guide
Huron Heights, London, Ontario: the complete neighbourhood guide. Ryan Hodge and Sandra Tavares, London, Ontario Real Estate Brokers, take you through one of London's most underestimated east-end neighbourhoods: its history, schools, parks, housing stock and who it suits best. If you're searching Huron Heights London Ontario homes for sale, start here.
Long before the subdivisions, Huron Heights was a farming settlement called The Grove, centred on Clarke Road and Huron Street, with its own church and schoolhouse. Settlers took up land grants here from the 1820s, and the Grove Cemetery still sits on Huron Street today. By the 1870s, wealthy London families, including the Whites of agricultural-machinery fame and later the Blackburns of the London Free Press, built country estates along Kilally Road, some made from stone pulled from the Thames riverbed.
London annexed the area in 1961, and suburbia arrived fast. Huron Heights was built out in four phases through the 1960s, the last known as Huron Village. In March 1963, the Huron Heights Shopping Centre at Huron and Highbury opened Canada's very first Kmart. Across the plaza, Jimmy "the Greek" Agathos ran the beloved Huron House restaurant and famously refused to leave when developers tried to push him out.
Today, Huron Heights offers established bungalows and split-levels on generous lots, townhomes north of Huron Street and quieter newer streets near Kilally Road. It is home to Fanshawe College, the Stronach Community Recreation Centre and Thames River valley scenery, with quick access to Veterans Memorial Parkway, Highway 401 and London International Airport.
