SHINee is now split across three different companies, and the group hasn’t ended.
In 2024, Taemin and Onew left SM Entertainment, the only company they had known since debuting in 2008. In K-pop, members leaving the company usually comes right before members leaving the group. Other SM groups had tried a similar arrangement, and for EXO it ended in a years-long legal fight.
So why did SHINee hold when others cracked?
In this video, we break down the three reasons SHINee survived the split: a quiet exit, a shared calendar, and one rule that changes how you think about what a K-pop group actually is. We also follow Taemin, who changed companies twice in two years, and look at why his moves never pulled SHINee apart.
This is the story of how one group figured out something most of K-pop still hasn’t: the company isn’t the group.
