An extract from the famous Eclogue IV by Vergilius. The poem invokes the prophecy of the Sibyl of Cumae, whose verses foretell the end of the Iron Age and the beginning of a new order of the centuries. Since Late Antiquity, this eclogue has been interpreted by the Christian tradition as a prophecy of the advent of Christ. Authors such as Lactantius and the emperor Constantine saw in the puer announced by Virgil a prefiguration of the Messiah. Sicilian Muses, let us sing a somewhat loftier strain! Not everyone delights in orchards and the lowly tamarisks; if we sing of the woods, let the woods be worthy of a consul. Now the last age of Cumaean song has come; the great order of the centuries is born anew. Now the Virgin returns, the reign of Saturn returns; now a new progeny is sent down from high heaven. You alone, pure Lucina, smile upon the birth of the child under whom the iron race shall first cease and a golden race arise throughout the world: your own Apollo now reigns. And under your consulship, Pollio, this glory of the age shall begin, and the great months shall start their course; under your guidance, if any traces of our guilt remain, they shall be made void and free the earth from endless fear. He shall receive the life of the gods and shall see heroes mingled with gods, and himself be seen by them, and shall rule a world made peaceful by his father’s virtues. “Such ages,” the Fates said to their spindles, “run on,” in harmony with the steadfast will of destiny. Come now to your great honors—the time is already near, dear offspring of the gods, great increase of Jupiter! Behold the world swaying under its convex weight, the lands and the expanses of the sea and the deep heaven; behold how all things rejoice in the age that is to come! Oh, may the last part of a long life then remain to me, and breath enough to tell of your deeds: neither Thracian Orpheus shall surpass me in song nor Linus, though his mother help the one and his father the other— Calliope aiding Orpheus, fair Apollo aiding Linus. Even Pan, if he should contend with me and Arcadia be the judge, even Pan would confess himself defeated with Arcadia as judge. Begin, little child, to know your mother with a smile (ten long months of weariness she bore for you); begin, little child: him on whom his parents have not smiled, no god has deemed worthy of his table, no goddess of her bed. #Virgilio #ÉglogaIV #SibilaDeCumas #EdadDeOro #Advenimiento #Profecía #Latín #Aria #Ópera #Virgil #EclogueIV #SibylOfCumae #GoldenAge #LatinAria
