We started our adventure at the Alborns Track Car Park, with myself and The Clueless Nomad hiking the track while The Forsaken Explorer tackled it on his motorbike. Along the way, we stopped to explore as many of the old gold mining sites, historic mines and relics as we could find.
The weather was wet and showery, but that wasn't going to stop us! With waders, rain jackets and waterproof bag covers, we were prepared to get out there and explore. We ventured off the main track to investigate old mine workings and other interesting spots along the way.
In total, we covered 16.5 km on foot, including all the side missions into the mines and surrounding bush.
The Big River 4WD Road begins approximately 9 km along Soldiers Road, after the Alborns Track car park. Soldiers Road is signposted from State Highway 7 (SH7), just south of Reefton.
The track winds through regenerating beech forest and passes numerous historic mining sites before reaching the old Big River goldfield settlement and Big River Hut.
The route includes gravel roads, rough rocky sections and stream crossings, which can flood during periods of heavy rain. It is a challenging route recommended for experienced four-wheel-drive users.
The road can also be used by walkers and mountain bikers, although the rough 4WD track includes gravel, mud, rocks and some steep descents.
Big River Hut is a serviced Department of Conservation hut and requires booking.
