For generations, Indigenous stories around Puget Sound described a dangerous power tied to specific places where the ground shook, slopes moved, and water turned violent. In 2005, researchers compared those a'yahos story sites with the modern geology of the Seattle Fault — and several of the locations lined up with landslide terrain and one of the most dangerous crustal faults beneath a major American city. This episode follows the old records, Thomas Waterman’s place-name archive, LiDAR evidence, and modern earthquake research to ask a careful question: are some of these stories preserving cultural memory of destructive earthquakes and landslides, or are modern researchers seeing a pattern because they already know where the fault is?
