In 1897, a Kiowa soldier at Fort Sill described a towering rock far to the north. He said no living Kiowa had seen it — but the old men had told them exactly what it looked like: a single enormous rock, scratched sides, no trees on top, and nothing else like it in the country. The place was real. Today it is called Devils Tower. This episode follows the 1897 Kiowa account, James Mooney’s historical research, the older northern geography of the Kiowa, and the physical formation of the Tower itself. The mystery is not supernatural knowledge. It is cultural memory: how can a people preserve a vivid picture of a distant sacred landmark after generations of migration and displacement? Sources: 1.
