UPI MDR Row: Supreme Court Refuses Stay on Charges Above ₹2,000 | No UPI Day on October 2 The UPI payment system is at the centre of a major debate as the Supreme Court has refused to grant an interim stay on the proposed 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for specified UPI merchant transactions above ₹2,000, scheduled to take effect from October 15. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana has sought the Centre’s response on the legal and policy basis of the new charge. Justice Joymalya Bagchi also questioned the nature and legal basis of the levy during the hearing.
