Before Emma Lazarus, the Statue of Liberty was primarily a monument to republican liberty. Her 1883 sonnet gave the statue a new identity—the “Mother of Exiles,” lifting a lamp for immigrants and refugees at the golden door. Lazarus wrote amid the arrival of Jewish refugees fleeing violence in Eastern Europe. Her famous invitation to the tired, poor, homeless, and tempest-tossed transformed a fundraising poem into one of the defining statements of American identity. Versewell preserves the public-domain sonnet’s immortal closing and central images while adding a new verse, bridge, melody, arrangement, recording, and visual narrative. The lamp remains the emotional center. Subscribe to @SongsofFreedom-Versewell for songs about what freedom offers, not only how it is won. Continue with “No Place Left to Run” for the refugee’s perspective and “Bury Me in a Free Land” for another essential woman’s voice in the freedom tradition. Does your family have an immigration or arrival story connected to America? Share only what you are comfortable sharing. Source & rights: Based on Emma Lazarus’s public-domain 1883 sonnet.
