Ten days after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her, Christa Pike has been discharged from the hospital and returned to the prison she has lived in for more than 30 years. According to her attorneys, she can walk “just around the room, not very far.” She is still on death row.
All week, she’s been called the only person who ever survived her own execution. She isn’t.
In this video, we look at five people in American history who survived an execution attempt: in Louisiana in 1946, in Ohio in 2009, and in Alabama in 2018 and 2022. What happened to each of them afterward may say a lot about what could come next for Christa Pike.
We also look at what courts have said about whether a state can try again, why Tennessee is pausing executions through the end of 2026, and what is still unknown about her future.
Note: this video is based on court records and public reporting. Historical cases are presented as context, not as a prediction of what Tennessee will do.
