“Ave Maria” is one of my favorite songs of all time, so I went into this Dimash performance with a very specific version already living in my head.
I expected something closer to the traditional lyrical version I know and love, especially the Josh Groban rendition. And for about half the performance, I caught myself comparing Dimash’s interpretation to something I was already attached to.
Then I realized: what’s the point of wanting two versions that sound the same?
Once I stopped comparing and let this performance exist on its own terms, I really started to appreciate what Dimash was doing.
This may be one of the most restrained performances I’ve heard from him, perhaps alongside “Ikanaide.” His breath control was remarkable, especially the way that first note seemed to emerge almost effortlessly rather than beginning with a hard, obvious onset.
It wasn’t what I expected, and that ended up being part of what made it interesting.
I think this is one I’m going to need to hear a few more times.
