PERAST 🇲🇪 Montenegro's "Venetian Jewel" & Our Lady of the Rocks 4K

Tucked at the base of towering black mountains, Perast looks as though a wealthy Venetian aristocrat packed up his favorite Baroque palaces and dropped them perfectly on the edge of a Balkan fjord. But the town's most incredible architectural marvel isn't on the land—it’s floating in the middle of the bay. Our journey begins on the sun-baked, peaceful waterfront of Perast, walking past a staggering collection of 16 grand Venetian palaces and 17 historic churches that line the single coastal road. Leaving the shoreline, we step onto a boat, gliding across the glass-like, deep azure waters of the Boka Bay. Our destination is the legendary Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela). Remarkably, this entire island is completely man-made. Beginning in 1452, local sailors spent centuries dropping rocks and sinking their own old, seized ships into the bay to create a foundation strong enough to hold this breathtaking blue-domed church. It is a stunning testament to human devotion—though you have to admit, intentionally sinking your own ships is a very dramatic way to build a church! We step off the boat to explore the island and the interior of the church, where the silence of the bay wraps around you like a blanket. Recorded June, 10 (4PM).
