Caro-Kann Advance Variation — a positional repertoire for Black that you can play without memorizing. In the fashionable lines after 3...Bf5 4.Nf3, Black plays an early ...c5 and walks into long forced variations where he is constantly on the edge. You can draw without playing, or lose without playing.
In this video I suggest a different path: Black prioritizes his development and delays ...c5 until it is genuinely useful, an approach I was greatly inspired to adopt by Vladimir Burmakin's games. After two of Burmakin's own games, we follow how Magnus Carlsen chose the same setup in his online games against Wesley So (2020 and 2021), and we reach the critical position of the whole repertoire.
The key question there is: which knight move? Against each White waiting move (Kh1, Re1, g3 or h3) Black has a different best answer between ...Nf5, ...Nc8 and ...Ng6, and every choice follows from logic, not memory: the back rank, the tempo with ...Bf5 and the Qe1 idea met by ...Bb4. It is entirely viable and asks only for understanding the position. In other words, Black can simply play chess. After the introduction, I briefly examine Mieses–Kann 1885, the game that made the Caro-Kann a serious opening, with Kann's beautiful double-pin combination.
